Summary of the article

Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly become part of everyday life, influencing how we communicate, work, and access services. In healthcare, its use is expanding just as quickly – from clinical decision support and diagnostics to administration, documentation, and patient engagement. While the HPCSA recognises AI’s potential, it also highlights the ethical, legal, and professional risks associated with its use, including bias, data privacy concerns, and over-reliance on automated systems. Therefore, these ethical guidelines on the use of AI provide essential guidance for healthcare professionals on responsible use in clinical practice. They support practitioners in using AI in a way that minimises data-related harm, promotes equitable and safe patient care, and protects professional accountability.
